Yesterday two members of the YCC, Charlotte and Andy, headed to Staffordshire Uni in Stoke-on-Trent to give a talk to their Advertising and Brand Management course.
With a 60 page presentation in hand, we were greeted by first, second and third year students of the course in their studio, to hear about learnings of the ad industry in bite sized chunks.
As a course, there were people who are looking to go into the creative department and also account management, so trying to diffuse the stereotype of a common hatred for each other we covered an array of topics; everything from who the YCC are and how we can help you online and offline, to why your portfolio is so important and the types job roles there are in agencies was covered.
Our aim is to be completely honest with our talks, perhaps even scare them a little to try harder – especially when students can sometimes live in a bubble at university.
By covering tricky subjects of placements, networking and why working in London doesn’t always have to be the way to have a successful career. We hopefully left the students with more of an understanding that we do have amazing jobs, with perks only some people could dream of, but at the same time, it’s hard, sometimes stressful and often not straightforward.
After a three-hour session became six with questions, book crits and some one-on-one advice, we finally hit the road. Big thanks to John and co for getting us in and hopefully helping inspire the next generation.
If you’d like us to drop by your school, college or university for a workshop, talk or anything else, email email@example.com and we’ll see what we can do.
Next stop, Swansea.
