Last week I popped by the Copywriters Unite meet up in Manchester. Hosted by the lovely Megan Wright, the evening saw a host of wordy creatives flock to Manchester bar Ply, for a good old beer and natter!

There are numerous abbreviations the ad-world uses in day to day chit chatter. But what do they actually stand for again...? From ACD to Zip. We've got you covered! Part 1
So the return of Manchester’s mini ad school is upon us, and this time they’ve got two programmes. Their course for students and grads is taking applications as we speak, and it's on closing this Friday, so you better get cracking.
So last week I was on a panel (I know, me, ha) to discuss Liverpool’s creative skills – after I took a course back in Jan. I had no idea there was a problem, until noticing I’d been studying here for 3 years, yet always gone to London or Manc for experience. Liverpool is famous for music, art, history! Why not here?
Last night I was a critter at the DMA / IDM / Graeme Robertson Trust Big Book Crit in London. There are a few more happening in Manchester, Norwich, Edinburgh and Bristol TOMORROW. So if you’re reading this and haven’t registered, head here.
We had 15 minute crits with student/grad teams – which isn’t a lot for someone like me who waffles on – but it did throw up a few thoughts that I thought might be good if you attend something similar in the future. *Cough* a bit like our R/GA Speed Dating in a couple of weeks.
Here are a few ideas to get the most out of your quick-fire crits.
Whilst everyone’s banging on about the London ad scene, there’s a heap of top work being made outside the capital that doesn’t get shouted about enough. We already know London kills it! But some absolute shit hot brands owe their advertising success to, yep, agencies up north. If you don’t believe me check out Prolific North's Top 50 Agencies of 2016.
Here’s some examples you’ll probably recognise…
Gone are the days when ad training only existed in London. This past decade has seen a shit ton of creative aid pop up outside of the capital, or at least on the internet. Yes, it’s hard to believe when many seniors simply suggest schemes that exist down south, which are of course fabulous, but not something everyone can afford or travel to when just starting out (me).
Most training isn’t just for students, and can be attended any time. So, don’t get into a strop about how you’ll never get into the industry because you’re oh so deprived whilst 'stuck' up North (again, me). I’ve found lots of similar stuff going on up these ends to tide you over in the meanwhile.
